The Hyphen

When someone passes away there are two important dates that become relevant: the day that person was born and the day they passed away, but have you ever thought about that little hyphen in the middle? The hyphen represents everything you’ve done from birth until the day you died. When someone dies the first thing that comes to mind is not how big his or her house was, how many cars they owned, or how much money and material possessions that they had accumulated. The first comment is always about that person’s character, such as: what a nice person he or she was (or maybe the opposite), or the nice (or maybe not so nice) deeds that they’ve done. If today was your last day on Earth, would you be proud of how you lived your life? Would you be proud of how you treated people? These are the things that people will remember most about you. What do you think people would say about you? We don’t want to leave behind a trail of broken hearts, hurt feelings, and offenses. Let’s live our lives with kindness and help people when we can, forgive people who have hurt us and ask for forgiveness when we have offended someone. Let your arms be a place of refuge for friends and loved ones to fall into when life hasn’t been very kind to them. Speak life into others and be encouraging. Your words and deeds will far outlive you. We only get one life, so let’s make it count and make it kind!

PRAYER: Thank you Lord for this life that you have given me. Continue to help me to live a life that is pleasing in your eyes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
